A wonder remedy
Powerful antibacterial, antimicrobial, antifungal and anti-inflammatory properties
Most people know about the remarkable properties of the Australia Ti Tree Oil ( Melaleuca alternifolia), but not many are aware that New Zealand has its own native Ti Tree, the ‘Manuka Tree’ (Leptospermum scoparium) which has very specific healing properties. They both belong to the same family Myrtaceae, and the essential oils of the family are mostly from eucalyptus and melaleuca trees. Nutmeg and clove are further members of the Myrtaceae group. All are highly antiseptic, a tonic and stimulant being useful for infections of varying degrees, particularly of the respiratory system.
Manuka Ti Tree oil 30 times Stronger than Aussie Ti Tree oil
Manuka Ti Tree Antibacterial effectiveness is 30 times more potent than the Australian Ti Tree Oil
The Manuka Tree is a bushy plant with small spiky leaves and bears white or pink flowers. The essential Oil is found in little pockets inside the leaves, which need to be broken to release the aroma.
The chopped plant material undergoes a steam distillation process in which the essential oil is extracted. It has been proven to contain powerful antibacterial, antimicrobial, antifungal and anti-inflammatory properties which make it useful in a wide range of conditions.
The Manuka tree also produces a nectar which bees turn into a rich amber Honey Known as Manuka Honey. Manuka Honey is also well known for its curative properties. Far more Australian Ti Tree Oil is produced and marketed successfully worldwide due to a more cost-effective distillation practice. The Antiseptic action of manuka is 100 times more potent than carbolic acid and yet is non-poisonous to humans and animals. Manuka Oil is proven to be well tolerated by the skin and is useful for many different conditions applied topically. It can be diluted when applied to sensitive skin by adding a few drops into a base oil. Research has proven manuka oil to be active against a wide range of micro-organisms that cause irritation and infection of the skin and body. The Oil is particularly effective against acne, dermatitis. Itchy and irritated skin, and scalp, sunburn, burns, fungal infections, warts, parasites.
It is also very successfully used in the treatment of wounds, cuts, abrasions, and all sorts of infections. Its ability to strengthen the immune system in general is also well-researched and makes it an efficient remedy against colds and flu.
Antibacterial properties
Its antibacterial effectiveness is approximately 30 Times more potent than the Australian Ti Tree. In one report it was demonstrated that bacteria count o unwashed hands was 3000 per 50cm2, after washing in distilled water it dropped to around 2000 per 50cm2 but when washed in manuka oil solution the count was less than 2 per 50cm2.
History of Manuka Oil
Manuka oil has long been valued for its healing properties. For centuries Maori and early European settlers of New Zealand knew the therapeutic benefits and uses of the Manuka tree and its oil. Maori were very adept at using native trees and plants for food and Maori medicine . Infusions and poultices were made form the leaves and inner bark, and the seed capsules and sap were chewed. Early European migrants produced a tea from manuka leaves for refreshment and health. A concoction of leaves was drunk for urinary complaints and used to reduce fever. The leaves were boiled in water and inhaled for head colds. Leaves and bark were boiled together and warm liquid was rubbed on stiffs backs and rheumatic joints. The leaves and young branches were put into many vapour baths. Young shoots were chewed and swallowed for dysentery. Both manuka and kanuka were used as medicinal plant alone and in combination with other native plants. Originally, Knowledge of medicinal plants was held exclusively by the Tohunga ( Maori spiritual healer).
This knowledge was kept alive and passed down the family by Elders who continue to use the remedies today. It is only recently that scientists have realised the active ingredients on the manuka oil, which is a complex mixture of some 120 natural compounds. Laboratory teats show that starins of staphylococcus and streptococcus bacteria, and fungi are very susceptible to manuka oil, as is the yeast Candida albicans .
Penetration
Manuka oil and other essential oils have the ability to penetrate the skin and the human body in different ways.
Through the Nose- Inhalation is a quickest method by which essential oils enter the boy and take effect. The surrounding warm, moist air carries tiny molecules up the nose as we breathe in. When the air we breathe in passes over minutes hairs called cilia at the top of the nose, a signal is transmitted from the receptor cells to the olfactory bulb and then the limbic system in the brain. Neurochemicals are then released which are passed on via the nervous system to either relax or stimulate it according to the aroma molecules. These affect the body not only mentally but also physically- a small amount of the aroma molecules reach the brain and the lungs, and from there the rest of the body and its organs.
Tough the Skin-Essential oil molecules are extremely small and are therefore able to penetrate the skin via the hair follicles and sweats glands.
Since essential oils are soluble in fat, they can enter the dermis this way. Once there, they reach the tiny blood capillaries and lymph, from where they are transported around the body by the circulatory system.
